Wellinton City overview

The City of Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand's capital city, and is easily the country's most thriving and popular city. Wellington has a very unique, small inner-city feel with outdoor exploration right on its doorstep, often a few minutes away. People come in from around the region for work and recreation, with Kapiti, the Hutt and the areas of Masterton close by.

Wellington is extremely easy to navigate and explore, and due to its small, compact size, is best explored and navigated on foot or using the cities easy public transport systems. Interweaving alleyways and small streets interconnect the city and give it a homely and aventurous feel. Old Victorian buildings break the city from the modern, tall highrises in the city centre, the steep roads and streets add character, and its proximity to water and the ocean inspires exploration.

In the capital, style and expression define the city and its vibe and encourage diversity and character. Some of the country's best art galleries, restaurants, microbreweries, and coffee outfits make their home here, and fashion is diverse; from the high fashion of Lambton Quay to the op-shops of Cuba Mall. Visitors and locals alike are drawn by the government and business districts, the bohemian Cuba quarter or the entertainment of Courtenay Place.

Wellington is host to a number of top and award winning restaurants and cafes, as well as bars and clubs, and offers more eating places per head of population than New York! Wellington has a range of cuisines ranging from fresh local New Zealand food, to the taste of Europe with numerous French restaurants and cafes, as well as South American flavours from Mexico to Argentina.
